Using Computers at UCI

If you have a laptop computer and want to use UCI's wireless network (UCInet Mobile Access) you need to sign up for a UCInetID (your user name and password for using wireless Internet). Here are the instructions.
*In order to access Wi-Fi on campus, you must first activate your UCInetID.
  • On a device already connected to the internet, go to this website http://activate.uci.edu
  • Click on the “Faculty, Staff and Students” option

    • Enter your Student ID number in the first box--the 7-digit number assigned by University Extension. The number is preceded by three '0's. For example: '0001234567'.
    • Enter your date of birth in the second box using this format: MMDDYY (two-digit month, two-digit day, two-digit year)
      • Example: If your birthday is March 30th, 1981, you would type in 033081
    • Leave the last box empty. (Social Security box)
Ucinet macStep 2: Create a good password.
    • Follow the guidelines provided when choosing a password.
      • Your password must be at least 8 characters with at least one number that is not at the beginning or end of your password.
      • Password should not contain personal information such as your name or ID number.
    • Enter your password in both spaces provided. DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD!
Step 3: Choose a password security question and answer.
    • Choose one of the password questions from the drop-down menu.
    • Enter the answer to this question in both spaces provided.
Step 4: Read and accept the UCI Computer & Network Use Policy.
    • Click on “UCI Computer & Network Use Policy”
    • Read the policy page that pops up.
    • If you agree to follow the UCI Computer & Network Use Policy, click on the gray box that says, “Yes, I Agree. Activate my UCInetID”
Remember your UCInetID and Password!
  • If you receive an error message, follow these steps:
    1. Try signing up using a UCI library or computer lab computer
    2. Check that your are entering all information correctly
    3. Direct your problem to the Office of Information Technology (OIT ) at (949) 824-2222 or visit their office at Aldrich Hall, First Floor
    4. Visit the Activities Staff
  • You can access wireless internet once you have activated your UCInetID. Visit oit.uci.edu to register your device to the campus Wi-Fi (if not automatically prompted).

If you receive a message asking you to register your phone by providing your MAC address,
  • Check the MAC (Wi-Fi) Address of your phone by looking at your device settings. The MAC address should be given in the format XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
  • Using a device that is already connected to the Internet, visit http://www.oit.uci.edu/mobile/registration/
  • Click “Register or De-register your MAC address”
  • Login with your UCINetID
  • Enter a name for your device (any name is fine), the MAC Address, select your device type, then press “Register.” Your device should now be able to use Wi-Fi on campus.
If you have problems following these steps, please visit the Activities Office for help.

Where can you use computers on campus?
  • The Continuing Education student computer lab is in UXA 201.
  • The Langson Library also has computers for students to use.
  • The Humanities Instructional Resource Center:
  • Located in Humanities Hall Room 269, this lab is designed to help students practice their speaking and listening abilities. They have audiobooks for you to listen to and recording devices that you can use to practice speaking. It is free of charge and open Monday-Thursday 8am-6pm, Friday 8am-5pm. Ucinet social network analysis

“a set of nodes and the set of ties representing some relationship, or lack of relationship, between the nodes” (Brass, Galaskiewicz, Greve, & Tsai, 2004, p. 795).

Ucinet Software

Nodes, or actors, are the units of analysis in SNA and may represent individuals, groups/communities, organizations, or countries (Zack, 2000). Relationships define the connections or flow of material or non-material resources among the actors (Wasserman & Faust, 1994), and “resources might include social support, emotional support, companionship, time, information, expertise, money, business transactions, shared activity” (Williams, 2005, p. 22). For more information about networks, and definitions of some key terms, please read Introduction to Social Network Research: General Introduction and Major Terminology.

UCINET (a Windows product) is a comprehensive package for the analysis of social network data as well as other 1-mode and 2-mode data. Can read and write a multitude of differently formatted text files, as well as Excel files. Can handle a maximum of 32,767 nodes (with some exceptions) although practically speaking many procedures get too slow around 5,000 – 10,000 nodes. Social network analysis methods include centrality measures, subgroup identification, role analysis, elementary graph theory, and permutation-based statistical analysis. In addition, the package has strong matrix analysis routines, such as matrix algebra and multivariate statistics.

Integrated with UCINET is the NetDraw program for drawing diagrams of social networks. In addition, the program can export data to Mage and Pajek, other two software used for network analysis

The full program can be downloaded and used free for 60 days.

Windows

Installation works best if you right-click on the installation file (typically called something like setup32UCI6534.exe) and choose ‘Run as Administrator’. Similarly, it is also helpful to use ‘Run as Administrator’ when running UCINET itself for the first time, as this allows you to register the program for all users of your machine.

MAC

Ucinet For Mac

The best way to run UCINET on a Mac is to use a Windows emulator such as Parallels (or, of course, Bootcamp). However, it is (often) possible to run UCINET on a Mac using Wine. For more information, see this FAQ.

Be ready with the software installed in your portable computer by monday 28th when we will start work on it.
